Well now, where to begin. . . . Growing up in the '50's, in the Bronx. . . . ., Catholic grade school, Family to Church every Sunday, all girls Catholic High School until Senior year when WHAM! PUBLIC SCHOOL FOLLOWED BY A STATE COLLEGE. WELCOME TO A DIFFERENT REALITY!! This book, What's so Amazing About Grace?, has helped me to hear another's take on Christianity and all that it imposed on a person (a kid) growing up. . . .and don't we hang on to and use the negatives to keep us AWAY from our faith!? "The nuns ruined it. The priest was too strict in confession. They were WRONG! I'm not into that anymore!" Well, those were my ,though not really the theme of this book. However those thoughts are addressed by this look at Grace. What it means NOW to an adult. How the concept could change our world. How the Church seems not to attract the down and out (like Jesus did) but seems to repel people. . . . .by the RULES, the CRITICISMS, the NARROW OUTLOOK. This book is about the opposite of all those. . .it's about Grace. About forgiveness. About Love. How the Church needs to expound those ideas and ideals. I found the book very thought provoking and very helpful to me in understanding some of where I came from. . .and more to The point, where I want to be headed.Read full review
I bought this book after reading a library copy. Now, as a leader in one of my church's home teams, we are studying the entire 10-part series in our group. We are using the DVD and participant's guide with the same title. Philip Yancey has written an amazing book about a topic that's hard to live, but is sometimes the only way to heal deep wounds. The book is rooted in Bible scriptures and yet has controversial subjects that we've had lots of semi-heated discussions about during our Wednesday night meetings. This book can change your response to life's potholes by replacing anger and revenge with something much sweeter.
Anyone who wonders about the nature of God's forgiveness and undying love for the human race should read this book. Talk about helping you find freedom. Yancey explains grace in a way that will allow people to find the love and joy of their salvation. Should any unbeliever read this review, check this book out. All to often God is presented as a growly old codger who has anger issues or as a soft, effeminate presence. This book presents God as who He is, a loving Father who will go to the mat for His precious creation...us. I don't know much about literary style, grammatical usage and other such educated stuff. I do, however, know when my heart has been lifted and the joy of the Lord has been imparted to me. This book definitely does this. Enjoy!
I was introduced to this wonderful book when my Sunday school class did an 8 week study on it. I absolutely love this book, that is the simplest way to put it. It has changed my life. It has shown me how to become a better person and a more loving, graceful Christian. It is a book that everyone (Christian and Non Christian) should read! Philip Yancey shows people in a loving way, out of the box that we normally, as Christinas, put people into. A must read.
This book was a requirement for an ethics class. If you are a Christian and are open to the Holy Spirit this book could change your life. If you're not a Christian, it will give you a peek inside the heart of a person devoted to Christ and realize the Christian religion demonstrated in America today often goes against the teachings of Christ, but instead resorts back to the Old Testament, which was made into history the day that Jesus hung on the cross. I wish there was a way to spread this message to every believer and non-believer alike. I bought this as a hard cover book and on an audio CD. Buy the book. The reader on the CDs makes the book a real snoozer. The book itself is the kind you don't want to put down until it's finished.
