Very good series. All kinds of action & intrigue going on. Who knew there was so much crime going on in the Navy? It's related to "JAG" and that is my wife's favorite series. Just now viewing even though it started 20 years ago. Kinda behind the times here.

I've recently discovered NCIS. It's a great show, at least in the early years I've seen, almost as good as Magnum, P.I. Both series were created by Donald Bellisario, who is possibly the best at bringing us original stories and depth.

In Season Two I think the show really hit its stride, both the writers and the actors are having fun. And maybe more than anything that’s what makes NCIS a stand out show. The humour. It is a serious show, sure. They deal with serious issues. Each episode features a murder, or kidnapping or a terrorist plot with plenty action and excitement, but there’s the interactions between the characters too. Gibbs, the senior agent, DiNozzo and Todd and McGee his team, the Medical Examiner, Dr Mallard and his assistant; Abby the amazing forensics expert and even the Agency director Jenny Shepard. There’s funny dialogue and a real sense of the teasing rivalry between the agents as they scramble to impress Gibbs. The characters' relationships develop and change and this in turn changes them, so there's a depth to it. Sometimes you have to work at it to figure out what's really going on. In fact many of the show's fans claim you have to watch an episode more than once to really appreciate just what's happening. Gibbs, played by Mark Harmon has some great one liners, put-downs for his over eager team, it's dry witty writing, and the actor has great timing. But he also has a really sweet kind of interaction with Abby. There's a real sense of affection with their scenes together, and these contrast the otherwise hard-headed and driven character of Gibbs, giving him another facet. Michael Weatherly has real fun too, he clowns about, he pulls faces he does impressions, there's some very funny physical comedy, as the almost totally irrepressible DiNozzo. And with Gibbs as his straight man there are some wonderfully funny moments, and a great on screen chemistry. But there is another layer to the character, one that can't always hide behind a joke or a crass remark, and this develops through season two towards the shocking conclusion in the final episode. All the actors in this series shine, some of it undoubtedly down to great casting, they are just so believable in their parts, making it seem effortless. The writing is so good, it's funny but in the way real life is funny, the way people use humour to hide behind or to ease a tense situation, or to cut someone down to size when they need a little reminder. The characters are different. There is room for a little delightful eccentricity with Dr Mallard, but it never strays into caricature. McGee is perfect as the "probie" computer geek, but he's allowed to be much more, and if he is the butt of a joke sometimes he's also often the one who actually solves the problem. And in Abby they have a charmingly different character that is both incredibly passionate and knowledgeable in her work but utterly disarming and sweet in her interactions with the other characters. And on top of that she has a fabulous wardrobe and a set of gorgeous tattoos!! NCIS is a slow burn, I think. It's been around for a while, the characters first appeared in a couple of episodes of JAG, but it's no spin-off. You might even have watched a few episodes early on, and puzzled at trying to figure out just where in the CSI family of shows it sits. But of course it doesn't. And that's one of the things they even occasionally make jokes about in the show, that no one has heard of NCIS, that they are just a miss-spelling of CSI. But in season two I think the show has caught light. And you'd be doing yourself a real favour to catch some of this fine TV series.Read full review
