This is a fantastic book. Mike Howlett is definitely the pubs expert. This is the most detailed story of the insanity that was eerie pubs. With beautiful photos of these twisted and deranged comics. A comprehensive look inside the beginning , hey day and demise of the pubs. Plus in depth looks a the people who made this crazy time of the late 60s early 70s possible. If you are at all a fan of or just intrested in the story of a maniac comic empire. Definitely buy this book. And if you're like me a pubs collector then also grab Mike's follow up the weird indexes. This is a must have for collectors who go crazy trying to figure out the numbering system. I loved every single page of this book and highly recommend it. Mike has done a fantastic job. 5 stars for this one.

Interesting story with plenty of glossy pics…lays out the history of this rogue publisher who “borrowed” stories from other companies. When the 50’s mania regarding violence in comics affecting children killed the horror comic market publishers at that time either folded or moved to publishing other docile material. In the late 60’s publishers Warren and Skywald started producing high quality new magazine size horror comics which avoided comic code restrictions. Both companies had great artists and new stories. Along came Eerie looking to make a buck. First they outright stole stories and art from defunct pre-code printers then later would rewrite and redraw pre-existing stories with more gore and sexuality…even multiple times. Basically the only all new material were the gory bright covers featuring dismemberment, beheadings, and lots of blood, gore, and cleavage. Eventually they even started cutting and pasting their own covers to create new ones…with poor and obvious results. Very intersting and well researched. Awesome compilation from a true devotee to this unscrupulous publisher.Read full review

Oh man! I don't know where to start? I could go on all night raving and ranting nothing but excellent feverish feedback about this infinite cauldronous vault of supernatural delight! I mean it is BIG for one thing, it weighs about 3 pounds and is eleven by eight by one inches in dimensions give or take a cm or so... And the cover is boldly beautiful and has a dreamy creepshowish like color scheme it hypnotizes you if you stare too long. And it has every issue from those years when the originals were published that is why I bought it because I mean... I wasn't around then? but I get to enjoy them now, ha! I really do enjoy all the golden cool titles like EERIE, CREEPY,VAMPIRELLA, STRANGE TALES, WEIRD SCIENCE, you know those? And I had to add this to my ever growing collection. So to make a long story short, "I really dig this book!" so I gave it a 5 out of 5 star rating because it deserves it.Read full review
Beautifully crafted, author Mike Howlett writes a compelling, highly informative piece on the legendary and notorious Eerie Publications; not just on the horror mags (under the Eerie imprint) but also on publisher Myron Fass' other publishing ventures under his main umbrella company called Countrywide. For collectors of Eerie magazine comics, this is THE bible. A huge tip-of-the-hat to Mr. Howlett for sharing his knowledge of the Eerie Empire, gained through obvious painstaking research. The book itself is a gorgeous, premium 8 3/4 x 11 1/4 hardbound volume. Along with the text, inside is also loaded with example illustration pages and covers from publications released by Eerie and Countrywide. If you are a fan and/or collector of Eerie Publications magazine comics such as "Weird," "Terror Tales," Horror Tales," "Tales from the Tomb," "Tales of Voodoo," the controversial one-issued "Tales from the Crypt" from 1968, ect., do yourself a great service and purchase this magnificent companion to all things Eerie Publications and arguably the most notorious, most successful independent publisher of all time, Mr. Myron Fass himself.Read full review
