I love history and historical places. The White House has always fascinated me and this book is full of pictures showing people and events. Mrs. Clinton gives her viewpoint of actually living in the White House as First Lady and writes about the behind the scenes activity to major State dinners, entertainment and restoration projects. The photos are magnificent. She includes recipes (with photos) that will make your mouth water. Also included are First Family pictures and reminiscences. This is not your typical White House history book. It's much more. It's personal, informative and gives you an idea of how much the First Lady has to do with regard to planning. I found it very interesting to read and just may try one of those extremely fancy recipes one of these days.
This is a wonderful book for anyone interested in the Clintons or what really goes on during the course of the years that an actual competent president of the United States is in the White House. It is more about the White House than the Clintons. It would be nice if every president put out a book like this after they left office.

Written from a woman-centered and empowering position, this textual "invitation" through the US White House by co-President Hillary Rodham Clinton should be famous for its uniqueness and detail. What Hillary chose to reveal about the White House during her 8 years of living there provides us with a very different perspective. She includes details of the meals served, the china they were served upon, and decenters the public fixation on the furniture, the rooms, the material White House that anyone could take pictures of and write about. There are plenty of those kinds of White House texts already published, so why produce yet another picture book without personal views included? Hillary places the White House she lived in, in context. That is as unique as her experiences and opinions about living there. This view of the White House is the best one I've read.Read full review
Where I currently live too few students know a thing about modern US history and yet they are nearly about to become voters! Scary to think of the Britney Spears following casting votes without any political or historical awareness that relevant to this nation now. Surely a lack of reading historically relevant texts like this couldn't be the root cause of many social problems we currently face. First Lady Clinton, then, has a flowing style of writing that's reader friendly. What she's doing in the book is making the inside of the White House, which so few people come to know about, accessible.
Imagine being in the powerful enough position at the dawn of a new millennium to write about the mansion that states for democratic freedom and justice for ALL. Mrs. Clinton's position then as First Lady wasn't exactly enviable. Her husband, President Clinton, was being pursued by political adversaries who used double-standards to try to impeach him, even though he had been a terrific two-term US president, whose popularity nearly around the globe rarely waned. This book is as much about being grace under fire as can be. It's a must own, historical read.
