This DVD comprises the first complete and only season of 'The Comeback' starring Lisa Kudrow and created by Michael Patrick King of 'Sex and the City.' Forget about her character, Phoebe from 'Friends.' Ms. Kudrow believably plays Valerie Cherish, a has-been star/celebrity who at one time was the co-star of a B-list prime time network comedy show. Her character married quite comfortably well, but is trying to jumpstart a comeback with the onset of a role in a new comedy show with a concurrent intrusively filmed reality show. Hilarity ensues. The entire show is darkly humorous, biting at times, clever, slightly naughty, well written and highly entertaining. I'm not a laugh out loud person and I laughed out loud often during the course of watching the episodes. It has a 'behind the scenes' feeling to it: in a rather voyeristic way. You're watching Valerie screw up, act, over-rehearse, try to maintain control, play mommy, be humiliated etc... The viewer is shown that Valerie is relatively selfish, but still has a heart. Twenty, thirty and forty-somethings should appreciate Valerie Cherish's struggle to maintain her hipness, although she rarely succeeds. Fantastic and well thought out supporting cast. You'll be hearing much more from these talented people. Several cameo appearances too. Including two women I never thought I'd live see 'shoot the bird.' Deserved a much better shot by its network before being uncerimoniously yanked after only one season. On a brighter note, the video transfer on this 2 disc DVD set is excellent. Production values are high. They spent alot of money on this series and it shows. Great sets, costumes and camera work. Several episodes contain optional commentary from Michael Patrick King, the wonderful Ms. Kudrow and Ms. Kudrow as Valerie Cherish (a total hoot!) Also contains some additional footage, such as a 'Dancing With the Stars' bit. 13 glorious episodes. Wish there were more... Highly recommended!Read full review
in a big departure from playing phoebe, valerie cherish and lisa kudrow brings us the life of the faded 80's sitcom star and the parallel universe they reside in. i can see why the series only lasted one season because this series is a one note charley in that once you get a handle of what valerie cherish is, you just get sick of her and hope that she ultimatly ends up in a career selling real estate.
I wasn't expecting this to be that great, but this was a "laugh out loud show" during so many moments for me. You really feel for Lisa Kudrow's character, as she struggles to be a middle aged character in a more youthful sit-com, after she had been successful to an earlier generation. The "reality show" that documents her "comeback" is almost like life imitating art, but the laughs are really here in this, and it's easy to devour multiple episodes in a sitting. Good and funny show.
I had to review this because I can understand why there was only one season. Thank Goodness!! Lisa how could you? You were so great on "FRIENDS" how could you do that to yourself. They made her look like she was desperate to fit in. Basically disliked and out of place. I know it was the character she was playing, but her voice drove me crazy. It was over priced and I own every season of Friends and wouldn't part with anyone of the seasons. But couldn't wait to lose this one. Sorry Lisa!
It amazes me that this show didn't catch on with HBO viewers. Lisa Kudrow help create, co-wrote and was an executive producer of this, her series. Any actor who can take pot-shots at herself like Ms. Kudrow, deserves kudos! I wasn't a huge fan of Friends, but when I did watch, it was Kudrow that was the one that made me laugh the most, and hardest. I wish for all the world that The Comeback has lasted at least three seasons, but thank God we have a season to watch many times, and laugh every time!
