I had one of these when they first came out and it was a mistake to sell it. When I finally found this one I bought it. It doesn't have HDMI but OSLINK and coax digital sound just as good. This unit's amp is better than all but today's top end AVRs like Marantz and NAD. The volume is old school not one of the free spinning new digital 125 db knobs that take forever to get loud or turn down in half db increments. It also has dual subwoofer outs for running2 subs instead of having to use a Y adapter to split the signal like AVRs today. Stereo listening is also great, like a high end integrated stereo amp. AVRs today are not up to task for pure 2 channel stereo operation.

I was in the market for something Sony made that had ample power with low distortion. I Have been a E-Bayer for years! I have been "lurking" on the Sony ES receiver pages for awhile. Now that I have owned a handful of newer/older and vintage Sony's, I can honestly say, this is my favorite one. It has really good power and virtually no distortion. Many of the newer Sony Models have way more distortion than this unit. I dont get it.. You would think the newer models have lower distortion, but check the specs on the newer ones. I was told that the V555ES was the same thing, and after owning them both, thats not the case. The V555ES dosent compare. The DA555ES, reproduces sound amazingly in the 5.1 mode, awesome for the Olympics (Watching SOCHI winter olympics)I love the Ample power it has (able to move infinity studio monitors effortlessly) and plenty of power left over for the subwoofer. The digital inputs are great for connecting the components. IMO, this blows away some seperates that cost 4000$ or more. I can honestly hear sounds on the TV, and in Music I never heard before. Its that amazing on the sound reporduction spectrum. Sony really had it right with this one, and its big Brother the DA777ES. If you are in the market and can find one of these units, I would highly recommend. As close to distortion free as I can find. I now am the proud owner of 2 DA555ES's, and plan to keep them for years. I tried to substutite other ES models for this, and just don't like the sound. (distortion, Lack of low end bass.) Only negative I can say about the units, is they run faily warm under loud music. Its good to keep them in a well ventalated area. Also, the remote control (LCD) is easy to use once you get the feel for it. As for how this compares to other units. I have owned everything from Yamaha to Onyko to Pioneer Elite and Kenwood as well. Again, this is my favorite model. Also if you want to listen to Heavy Bass in your music, turn it up to +10db, this will have no problems moving even 15" woofers. Like the bass boost too!Read full review
This was purchased as my 3rd AV tuner for my Bose Acoustimass home theater speakers. My original Sony product was their STR- V555ES. I have continued to purchase Sony's ES-series products circa 1999-2000 as the sound is excellent with very little distortion. My 400 CD carousel player is on 4-8 hours / day. I want my current ES series product to continue to work for more years. When that "dies" I'll replace it with this unit. The Optical Ports make a huge difference vs. wired unit-to-unit connections.

I purchased this product because I have had good luck with a similar vintage Sony DB940. The Sony receiver arrived with two layers of bubble wrap "protection." The volume know was pressed in tightly due to a hard knock it received in shipping. It worked fine for a day or so but then began to exhibit intermittent operation. I troubleshot the intermittent connections and determined that the receiver was damaged in shipping and due to poor design by Sony. Sony does not properly heat sink the output stage driver ICs which causes them to operate VERY hot. Hot enough to lightly char the PC board. The heat also causes the solder joints to fail. Further, this receiver uses the chassis as a ground path which, after being knocked around in shipping causes poor connections to appear. After fixing numerous solder joints and tightening up connections, the receiver works well. Another design defect is that the heat sink is insufficiently sized which causes the receiver to operate very hot when pushed hard. The fan doesn't come on until the cover of the reciver is too hot to hold your hand on it. Overall, I am dissapointed with Sony's ES line.Read full review
