Matthias "Matt" Lee Whitlock (Denzel Washington) is the respected chief of police in the small town of Banyan Key, Florida. He has recently executed a successful, high-profile drug bust that turned up $450,000 in drug money. Although he enjoys his job, his drinking while on duty is an obvious character flaw, exacerbated by his pending divorce from his wife, homicide detective Alex Diaz Whitlock (Eva Mendes). Matt is currently seeing local resident Anne Merai Harrison (Sanaa Lathan) -- whose husband Chris (Dean Cain), a former professional quarterback turned security guard, abuses her. Matt's friend, Chae (John Billingsley), a medical examiner, jokingly wants them to use the $450,000 to go into business together. Matt, however, finds out that Anne has just been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Anne intends to reward Matt's loyalty to her by making him the sole beneficiary of her $1,000,000 life insurance policy. Matt tries to find a way to give Anne some hope and suggests that she should travel to Switzerland to undergo a newly-developed treatment. The problem is that Anne has been living beyond her means and does not have any money. Desperate to help her, Matt bends the rules and loans her the $450,000 so she can make the trip. When the $450,000 goes up in flames in a suspicious house fire that kills Anne and Chris, however, Matt finds himself in a great deal of trouble. Not only is the money now gone, but Matt knows that even though he is innocent, circumstantial evidence—such as the insurance policy and the fact that he had been seeing Anne—could make him the prime suspect. With the Drug Enforcement Administration soon arriving to pick up the now lost cash, and Alex serving as the lead detective in the homicide investigation, Matt races to stay ahead of his own police force and everyone he's trusted. He has to prevent anyone discovering his connections with Anne so that he can figure out what really happened before he himself falls under suspicion.Read full review
I would say Denzel's part isn't bad cop like Training Day, but rather gullible or clueless. He risks his livelihood, as police chief, over an affair with a beautiful, yet manipulative married woman. He is in way too powerful of a position to risk it all on a whim and shouldn't have gotten whipped so easily and ;therefore, I said to myself when I was watching it, "what was he thinking?" He should have known better! Not only does he risk his job, but time in prison, if the feds find out he took the government's money(all for his secret lover) and if they ever catch up to him about the staged murders. There are alot of gullible people in the world and Denzel plays this part well! He has to use all his power, influence, and all the sneakiness in the world to narrowly avoid detection each time. Denzel is obviously the star, but this movie also has a loaded superstar supporting cast(each could star in their own movie). This movie is also a well written story, as their lives intertwine perfectly. You'll be surprised just what happens and just how many turmultuous situations Denzel has to overcome. I loved it!Read full review
We rate Out of Time to be a very good movie. We have owned it for some time, and have watched it many times. We like to share it with others who havenet seen it, and most enjoy it after watching. It is suspenseful enough to keep you guessing throught the movie and offers several twists. Not so much of an action film, as it is a drama. If you like Denzel in all of his other films, you'll enjoy Out of Time. This movie would be most similar to his role in John Q. It'll keep you guessing, right up until the end. GOOD MOVIE!! Our Overall Rating: 8 out of 10 Rent It or Buy It? Its definitely worth buying We hope you found this Review HELPFUL! If so, let us know and CLICK YES below! Thanks Again! CCR
To watch Denzel Washington acting performance is always refreshing. He is one of the best actor in the United States of America. I like the plot in this movie because you do not know what is going on almost until the end.
