Lanshy is just one more example of a dramatically glamorized drama about the life and times of a killer. I'm not aware of anyone who Meyer Lansky actually killed, himself. But as a member of of a major crime syndicate along with Charles (Lucky) Luciano, Frank Costello, Benjamin (Bugsy) Siegel, he surely was equally responsible for the murders of at least dozens of human beings. He was a thug; a smart one, yet still a thug. I have always gotten a kick of amusement from those portrayals of Lansky as the kind old grandfather type celebrating Chanukka, or other religious fiest. The truth is, that in the 1920's and early 1930's he and his associates orchestrated the takeover of the New York mob with the murders of both Faranzano and Masseiria, and most of their lieutenants. This consolidation was so severe and bloody that all the rest agreed to the formation of a commission headed up by Luciano and Costello. Meyer Lansky was basically, the bookkeeper for the whole operation. He wasn't flamboyant like the others, and worked very hard to always be the "invisible man" of the mob. He also had a good reputation as a moneymaker for all involved, which I'm sure was always good for the health. Later in life he allied up with the likes of Santo Traficante and the head of Cuba, Fulgencio Batista. With them, he controlled a large portion of the tourism dollars, gambling and hotel business, and even a portion of the Cuban Lottery. When Castro took over in 1959, Lansky lost everything that he had in Cuba. Even though he had been paying both Batista and Castro, hedging his bets not knowing who would win, he still lost. . .kinda like doing business with the Mafia, HA HA. After trying to find refuge in Israel as a Jewish Refugee and then refused, he offered millions to the governments of Argentina and Brazil for entry, but was refused. He eventually was returned to the USA. He always claimed to be retired and broke, but was reputed to have been worth in excess of $200M when he died.Read full review
Lansky is a Story of a man,who made his way through life in tough times.Meyer Lansky, and Lucky Luciano and Benjamin Seigel, were the architects of a life people enjoy legally today. Had Meyer been alive today,he would be looked at simply as another businessman, but because he had to make tough choices, history isnt kind to him. This is a great movie, about a great man.
worth a watch, Gerald Butlers character was the most exciting but only in the movie for about 5mins towards the end....the two main characters weren't that interesting.
