Birdman of Assisi: Art and the Apocalyptic in the Colonial Andes explores the reception of Saint Francis of Assisi and angels in the colonized Inca Empire. It examines images and beliefs related to birdmen among the Incas and other peoples of the Andes and how these were transformed in the colonial era by Christian missionaries. The author brings to light previously unknown images of Saint Francis with wings, flying through the air as a militant angel of the Apocalypse battling archfiends, rival religious orders, secular clergy, and even bishops. A key player in this transformation of the "little poor man" was the medieval prophet Joachim of Fiore and the influence that his eschatological prophecies had on the spiritual sons of Francis, especially in the new world. Although commissioned by the Franciscan friars, the Andean paintings and sculptures were executed by native artists with native sensibilities that critique colonial society and reveal an approaching end of the world and a controversial, even violent, role for Francis of Assisi at a final cosmic battle. In colonial Mexico the author discovers a similar situation but with different artistic solutions. Birdman of Assisi documents how a beloved medieval saint gained a new following among Incas and other native people of the Americas and how he continues to resonate with the diverse Andean population, both Quechua and Spanish speaking, to this day.

Birdman of Assisi is an impressive exploration of religious iconography and popular culture, an erudite and fascinating narrative that takes us from the European Middle Ages to the colonial Andes. Lara argues that for the early colonial Andes the image of Saint Francis might have been a more powerful Christian huaca (sacred object) than the Virgin Mary and sees the image of the winged saint as a figure of hope and liberation in statues and paintings still in use today. This volume is handsomely illustrated and makes important contributions to the study of colonial art, especially to our understanding of the angels of the Cuzco School of painting. It also traces the utopian and revolutionary charge associated to winged Francis in a region with the most abundant feathers and birds in all Latin American art. Paul Firbas Stony Brook University, Lara deftly demonstrates how the flying Saint Francis was accepted by Andeans as a birdman and shaman and how the apocalyptic tradition of Saint Francis as an avenging angel and Fiore's Third Age of the Holy Spirit merged with real-life apocalypses, from earthquakes to the Andean uprisings of the late eighteenth century. This book also shows that, far from being a historical curiosity, the veneration of the flying Francis and Joachimite prophecy continue to play an important part in the religious life of the rural Andes today.
