Up until artscroll came along, I'd say that the volumes of the Steinsaltz Talmud edition were the best. But alas, artscroll -in my opinion- has bulldozed the competition and squashed them, and that unfortunately includes the Steinsaltz edition Talmud. Nevertheless, there is perhaps one element in which the Steinsalts edition is better and this is its use of using historical facts and illustrations more frequently than the artscroll which in most volumes is non-existent. But I leave it to you dear reader to decide what is more important to you when it comes to learning the Gemara-Talmud, an in depth understanding of the sugya, or a better historical context? I personally would choose the understanding of the text and content. Others may choose otherwise. I'd still give this edition 5 stars for trying and being one of the first to explain the Talmud to the layman. Please vote on this and my other guides, it sure is appreciated!Read full review
