this is a awsomely fun and sometimes altogether frightful look at the life and times of the missunderstood, mistreated an incredibly awkward green skined wicked witch of the west, her sister (witch of the east), her father, mother, nanny and her friends including bog and a boarding school friend named sait Galenda (northern witch). this story is a biography of sorts for a fictional caracter and takes you on a jurney from her munchkinland childhood, too boarding school, to the emerald city, to the vinkus and finally to her death by the hand of the evil wizard of Oz with the help of the dim wited dorthey Gail and her lion, tin man and scarcrow friends!!! You'll soon find out that wicked is just a state of mind and evil is in the eye of the beholder. This book reminds us of the importance of never beleaving untile you've heard both sides of testory and judged for yourself!!!!Read full review
I believe Wicked is the most in depth and well written book Maguire has written. It chronicles the life of the Wicked Witch of the West from her perspective and her relationships with other well known characters from Oz including the Wicked Witch of the East, Glinda and of course Dorothy. These relationships are not what you would expect. For example she is actually friends with Glinda (they were roommates in college). Like Maguire's other spins of classic fairytales Wicked paints a much darker picture of Oz and all of the characters than what is portrayed in the classic Wizard of Oz story. You will see the progression of the "witch" Elphaba from innocent child to unlikely heroine to a bitter and "wicked" adult and how each of her life experiences changed her. By the end of the book you may even find yourself feeling sorry for Elphaba, which is something I didn't really expect. You may find yourself asking was she truly wicked? Or just misunderstood? This would be a great book for a discussion group.Read full review
I absolutely love the Wizard of Oz, so when I heard about Wicked I was very skeptical...I mean, the Wicked Witch's point of view...Come on, everyone knows it's all about Dorothy, right?! Well, I was totally mistaken! Wicked is now, by far, my favorite book. I actually bought the audiobook about a year ago and my husband, brother, & I all listened to it and then I re-sold it on eBay. Fast forward a year when I went to see the musical show and was surprised by how different it was. I completely enjoyed Wicked - The Musical, but it made me realize that I enjoyed Gregory Maguire's original version even more. So, I bought another copy!! By the way, my brother & husband loved the audiobook as much as I did!! They even listened to Maguire's sequel - Son of a Witch. I would highly recommend this book to anyone! I think it rocks!Read full review

Although my review title may be facetious, please believe that I love this book...I originally bought it when it was first published. That initial purchase was driven by curiosity - I was intrigued by the novel's subject but, truthfully, expected to be disappointed. Years and years later, after countless readings, after losing at least three copies of the book to friends and family to whom I'd recommended it, I can honestly say it's one of my favorite books ever.
