The stage manager of a popular music hall is charged with murder. During his confession, we see the story of the music hall and its entertainers in flashback. When the music hall closes down, a trio of unemployed friends vow to bring the business back from the dead by staging a musical they hope will be a hit. If their gamble pays off, they'll have the money to buy the theater for themselves and the power to control their own destinies.
I had seen this movie in the movie theater when it came out in 2009, and loved it. It has a little of everything: murder mystery, music reminscent of that of chantuese Edit Piaf, slapstick comedy, a bit of political ennui, a gangster element, and romance. It's in French, so you can brush up on your French, or turn on the English sub-titles.
Lovely recreation of an interesting period in French history. It is a political polemic and a couple of love stories. The production design is gorgeous.
A fun movie to watch that entertains the viewer. Great music and great script that keeps you glued to the screen. ****
