The book tries to discredit Maurice Herzog and the account he gave of the 1950 ascent of Annapurna. Herzog's book Annapurna is the classic and the revisionist view of Mr. Roberts is presently in a boring recitation of the different accounts from team members fifty years later. So there are differences and perhaps, oh my, creative intrepretations by Herzog. He was the leader, he organized and arranged the funding. He wrote a great book that I actually read in 1959 and was inspired to become a mountain climber. Roberts is less than inspiring. The book rates as average if you are interested in having all of the perspectives on the risks and rewards of climbing or any difficult enterprise. Picking at the heroism of Herzog seems un-necessary in order to elevate Terray and Rebuffat.
