I've read several of Bernard Lewis' books on the middle-east and Islam, and found this to be an excellent source for filling in the gap that exists between the view that the current bout of terrorism is motivated purely by religious zeal, and the more realistic view that the current situation is also very much political. In short, the 'glorious' facade of an Islamic warrior defending the faith against the onslaught of the infidels for the glory of God, is interestingly balanced by a much more realistic and underlying frustration of many within the Muslim world for their being no longer the conquerors, scholars and artisans that were for centuries viewed with respect, but have now been reduced (because of their self-imposed isolation from the west), to almost a third world group of nations what are falling farther and farther behind the west in technology, and the sciences. A facinating look at the ultimate results of pure isolationism.Read full review
Very interesting analysis of what happened to the Muslim world since the beginning of time until now. I decided to buy it to get a better understanding of the mentality of that people and what elements and decisions affected their thinking and helped in getting them to where they are today. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to know more about this subject.
Great book! Provides much detailed and needed info on the subject matter. The author does a great job on providing sound arguments that are very centrist and not so biased as opposed to other books.
This was simple reading and understanding of the Islamic point of view of the world. It has helped me with dealing with Muslins where I work and understand what is going on in the world right now.
I am not big on history, but this is an easy read, and the information is well-presented......................................not too biased. Good book.
