This is an excellent British detective series, based on the novels of Alan Hunter, and is set in 1960's Britain, 50 (!) years ago. It stars the great Martin Shaw as Gently and Lee Ingleby as his brash young sidekick. There is plenty of action in a backdrop of racism, non-stop indoor cigarette smoking, and police brutality. The series is intelligently written with brilliant acting. I have been a fan of Martin Shaw for years, so watched this while visiting relatives in the UK. I was very glad to find this in Region 1/North American format and look forward to buying the second series when I finish this one (the final disk plays tonight). I highly recommend this to any Brit mystery/crime series fan.
Martin Shaw and Lee Ingleby are simply superb together. The series is very entertaining. I plan on buying all of their DVDS. Hope they put more than the 7 they have now. Superb stories, very well written. I also hope the series continue t be shown on television.

The Gently series is a modern detective drama looking back at Northern England in the early-1960s. It features dramatic stories, the standard elements of a police procedural, and a window into how much (and how little) social values have changed over the past two generations.
