If you enjoy ridiculously stupid movies as much as I do, then you'll love The Benchwarmers! If it causes pain, it happens to someone in this film. If there is a bodily function, they make fun of it. If there is a stereotype to exploit, they do. And yet, I don't feel like a total idiot for having enjoyed this film. This film delivers exactly what you would expect from the stars of Deuce Bigelow, Napoleon Dynamite, and Tommy Boy - sophomoric humor in spades! It's nice to watch films like this, though, because you always leave the theater with a nice warm feeling inside, as if everything in life is infinitely more bearable after having watched such a ridiculous movie. I highly recommend the film to anyone who enjoys this type of movie (you know who you are). If you're one of those people who are easily offended, it may not be your cup of tea. I'd stick to reruns of Family Ties for all of your clean humor needs.Read full review
I really think that's the only issue with this film. If you've been a fan of Adam Sandler's work (this is a Happy Madison production), you'll like this movie. Not only was it produced by Sandler, but it was co-written by one of his longtime buddies Allen Covert. If you go into this movie not knowing what to expect, that's your own fault. I know this movie won't be received well by critics, but when has ANYTHING that Sandler's done ever been? Ontop of that it features Jon Heder aka Napoleon Dynamite. To me, this was a huge added bonus. I love Sandler movies, and I loved Napoleon Dynamite. Many people feel Heder's a terrible actor, but I think his delivery is hysterical. I found myself laughing throughout this film, and thought it supplied Heder with more great one-liners that will be quoted for the next year. After saying that, some of you might turn your nose up at me and tell me that I wouldn't know what a good movie is, but I enjoy and cherish Casablanca, The Godfather: Part II, and Good Will Hunting as much as anybody, but forgive me if I like to enjoy a little mindless laughter at times. If you didn't like Billy Madison, The Hot Chick, or Napoleon Dynamite, you'll hate this movie, no doubt. But then why would you even go see it in the first place?Read full review
(*** out of ****) I wasn't certain I'd enjoy The Benchwarmers but after seeing it, it's become one of my favorite comedies of all time. Certainly there is some toilet humor but it's really tame. The heart of the story is about forgivness, good sportsmanship and giving the underdog a chance to shine. There's a happy ending that brings tears to my eyes. Rob Schnieder shines in his role, as does Jon Heder and David Spade. These 3 are hysterically funny, as usual. Jon Lovitz makes a cameo well worth seeing, especially in one particular scene where he is driving KITT from Night Rider (if I tell more I'll spoil it). All in all, a magnificent comedy with a huge heart and a fantastic moral to be told. It proves that even if one isn't athletic, they can enjoy playing sports.
I rented this movie and we watched it 5 or 6 times and I am now looking to buy it. My hubby and I are 34 and have a 5 year old and a 6 year old (both boys). We love stupid humor movies like Ace Ventura, Austin Powers, Dumb n Dumber(not the second one though) and Blazing Saddles. My boys were young enough that the adult humor (and there wasn't too much) went right over their heads and there wasn't any nudity to worry about or foul language for that matter--right on, it's about time in a family movie. Yes, I would consider this a family movie. I know it's ironic but this movie teaches a great lesson and is absolutely HYSTERICAL-- througout the entire movie!!! I would watch it with or without my kids. Highly recommend this dvd to anyone and everyone with an open mind.Read full review
I enjoyed this movie however I thought the acting was sub-par! I know you don't buy this type of movie for acting but in many scenes it felt like they were reading straight off cue-cards and it didn't seem natural. John Heder's Character was So similiar to his famed Napolean Dynamite character it might aswell been him! I am starting to wonder if the Napolean character is a character or the only way he knows how to act in front of a camera. The bright spot in this movie was definately John Lovitz who plays a SUPER RICH Nerd and father of a kid that gets picked on. Also KIT from Knight Rider is in this movie for a moment and its a great cameo! Worth Renting but I would have second thoughts about buying! CUTE story however and a couple lovable characters!
