I've had several iterations of this lens over the years, as well as the 17-55 DX f/2.8, the 17-35 f/2.8, the 35-70 f/2.8, and the 20-35 f/2.8... I'm selling the most recent copy to make room for my new 24-70 f/2.8... I'm selling it with mixed emotions,m though. The 28-70 has less distortion, at several key focal lengths, in its zoom range compared to the 24-70, and it is equally sharp stopped down. Many pros feel that the 28-70 has a more pleasing color 'palette' than the 24-70, most agree that it is almost as sharp wide-open. Also, it's 'stubbier', shorter and wider than the new Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8. I've found that I prefer the 28-70's shape and balance on my D3 to the D3+24-70 combo... all that said, the 28-70 remains one of the handful of truly legendary pro line, 'gold ring' Nikon zoom lenses. Trying one for the first time leaves no doubt- 'the Beast', as many call it, is one of the sharpest, best handling zooms ever made, from any manufacturer. Try one and you'll see! I may just sell my 24-70 f/2.8, and keep the Beast anyway! =^DRead full review
I bought the latest manual focus model. I use it with my Nikon D300s camera. On this DX size body the lens is equal to a 410mm lens on FX or 35mm film camera. THe fast aperture gives fantastic bokeh and very shallow depth of focus, which is the main reason I bought this lens. Superb for outdoor portraits and shooting sports. The obvious drawback is that the lens is heavy, I use monopod for action shooting and a heavy tripod for portraits. Superb fast lens, gives you perspective and feeling to your pictures you can't get any otherway , sure there are zoom lenses that go up to 300mm, with a fraction of the price of this one, but so are the pictures, a fraction of what you get with this one
I wanted a prime long lens to use with my D300 for a trip to Alaska and wanted to hold down the cost. My 70-300 was just too slow for low light days and animals in shadows. I considered renting a better lens but ran into some insurance complications. Decided this lens was a good compromise with old technology but superb optics. It integrated okay with my camera with only a small loss of features, and the price was right. Like: Sweet, sharp, focus. Out performs my Nikon 70-300 zoom in low light. Great value, beats renting, I am able to make it work in most situations. Dislike: low depth of field at wide open f4, with no VR must use tripod or monopod,(wish it was f2 and Vibration Reduction II).
This lens EXcellent about many wayS, better when we use by DX cameras (means D3 be number one, because D3 can crop size (42~105mm),to me I feel comfortable of the size and weight, any way we need one extra wider lenses for style of outdoor, indoor so well with 28 mm,this lens look solid and beauty....as if 17~35mm F2.8D pretty more than them,I'm not sure manything with it,We must use and testing, and hear feedback from many the Master. This Lens of Japanese made not Germanier can't expect more have limit of it,Don't forget shot with backlight of ray-light or overcast ,THX
When I received this lens I was very impressed with the condition of it. It was in near mint condition and included every thing stated in the ad. This lens is very sharp at all f-stops. Even at the widest. This lens is a fast professional model that I use as my "walk around" lens for most events such as weddings. I do not recommend using this lens for travel due to its bulk and weight. This lens is a BEAST, hence the nick-name "The Beast". If I could say there are any cons to owning this lens, it would be just that. (the weight) Focus is accurate and very fast due to the silent wave motor used in this model. I would highly recommend this lens to any one in the market for one. Be aware that this lens is no longer produced by Nikon. It has been discontinued and replaced by the newer 24-70 f/2.8, but at a substantially higher cost difference. If that particular lens is out of your budget ,(as it was mine) consider the 28-70 f/2.8 lens. Look around. You will and should be able to find one on ebay around $900.00-$1200.00 depending on the condition of it. A FAR more affordable alternative to the 24-70 f/2.8. Good luck and I hope this makes your decision easier to make when considering your next lens purchase.Read full review
