This book is an epic story about a Confederate soldier and the woman he loves but hardly knows. The story takes place near the end of the Civil war and it parallels both the man and the woman as they go about their lives during this terrible time. I loved the movie and a lot of times people will say they loved the movie and hated the book, but in this case the book is at least as good, and maybe better than the movie. It allows the reader to learn in greater detail just how hard life was in those days. The book switches back and forth between the two main characters as he deserts and walks home from Petersburg to North Carolina, and she struggles to maintain her home and farm after her father dies. If you liked the movie you'll love this book, it's an exceptional work of fiction!
This was an excellent and well written story. I enjoyed every page. The characters were vivid and well portrayed. Historicaly acurate information about Civil War America. The author was true in depicting the daily struggle of survival for Mountain dwellers during the 1860's. No overly objectionable language. I would recommend this story to book clubs.
The book was accurately written in coherence to the civil war in some of the events that were written about. The romantic story behind it was charming and it showed many different ways of how people dealt with the hardships the war presented.
My teacher cancelled the book in my class so i never ended up reading the book entirely. I read the first couple chapters though and it seemed like the beginning of a very good book. I hope to read it when i have more time on my hands.
It was a great book and a fast read. Perfect book to cuddle up and read on a rainy day. Ten times better than the movie.
