I have seen various incarnations of the story of the last czar and the wily Rasputin but had never seen this version produced in the USSR - interesting take on this era of Soviet history - if the downfall of Tsarist Russia interests you then the film is worthwhile - the Kino Video Transfer is good not exceptional

If you are a fan of Russian cinema, this is one of the few movies available from one of the best directors, Elem Klimov. It is as haunting and vital as ever, and a very ornate and tempestuous glimpse at particular part of Russian history. This film, as well as Come and See, are essential movies to own. That being said, because of it's lack of availability I must be hard on Kino's terrible transfer. It is still great to see the film, but the technicals of this particular release is not without it's drawbacks, and that is all on Kino's terrible quality transfer. Kino should give it's Russian catalogue to Criterion, like Stalker. However, in order to see the film we, alas, must suffer through Kino's backward blunderings.

I thought the movie was correct in some respects but far too dramatic in others. I bought the movie to get another perspective on the "mad monk." The same materiel was presented with the addition of some extra home town drama but there was nothing new to speak of.
