The book was purchased due to decades long interest in warship design, knowing what has historicaly not worked helps to avoid repeating similar errors. Also, have read much of Mr. Preston's prior work, and know it to be first class. The text, supplemented by drawings and photographs, reviews the design of a wide variety of warships from several nations, including some 'icons' long revered by warship enthusiasts. Mr. Preston not only discusses the designs themselves, but the background leading up to them, placing the designs into the context of overall concepts, rquirements the designs had to meet, and external contraints. What I was able to read of it was very well done, informative, and worth a high recommendation. My one quibble is due to a printing error. In my copy the chapter on American flush-deck destroyers ended abruptly, the next page being one for the HMS Hood. Examination showed that about 12 pages were missing, their space taken by 12 repeat pages of those following the break. This means that anyone purchasing the book would be well advised to do so in a book store, so that a proper inspection may be made first, there being no way to know how many books in that press run were affected. In terms of rating, content well deserves 5 stars, but a broken book is a broken book, so I split the difference.Read full review
I CAN SEE THE FAULTS IN MANY OF THE WARSHIPS COVERED, BUT I DO NOT AGREE WITH SOME OF THEM.
