A portrait of Post World WarII years for three returning vets. The first of it's kind to tell the challenges of veterans picking up there lives after the horrors of war. A star studded cast for it's time and a perfect casting chose in "Harold Russell", a real World War II Veteran, who had lost both his hands. Though not an actor he gave an outstanding performance in the scene: where he is showing his fiance what his disability would really be like to live with, the most poinient and unforgettable of the movie. The only one of that era to compare is: Marlon Brando in "The Men". A must have classic of veterans in the aftermath of WWII.
This is a Classic B&W movie that everyone should watch. The acting is excellent as well as the directing and filming work. The movie tells the lives of returning servicemen from WWII and how they have to adjust to normal everyday life and the problems they have doing it. One of the actors is actually a Navy vet who is one of the stars in the movie . He is hardscaped by a war injury but overcomes it in many ways but not before he sees the wrong picture of himself in other's eyes. Great movie that I would highly recommend to anyone who wants to see what effect WWII had on returning vets.

I've long been a fan of Myrna Loy's acting and this is one of my favorite movies with her staring in it. The movie is loosely based on an article published shortly after WWII following some Marines who were returning home and the difficulties that they were facing and the story is just relevant now as it was when it was in the theaters. It was remade as a TV movie in the 70's or 80's reflecting on the struggles that those returning from Vietnam faced and could easily be remade today for those who returned from Iraq or Afghanistan

This has now turned into my number one favorite movie EVER, bumping the Lord of the Rings trilogy into second place (yes, I have eclectic taste). Hollywood doesn't make 'em like this anymore. Beautifully written, amazing cast across the board - all of them classic American actors/actresses - and masterful directing from one of the best. This movie won the 1946 Oscar for Best Picture, and totally deserved it. It depicts an America that used to be - and a generation that produced true heroes. Watch it, remember that generation, and be glad.
Wonderful movie. Great plot and bringing a real WWII veteran, with real war caused injuries, in the cast was great. It showing a little bit of how hard it is and was for our veterans coming back after war and trying to live a good life.
