Well this isn't the best of the Godzilla films, but it certainly doesn't bomb either. This movie does a really good job of reinventing the Godzilla story or mythology/lore...if you will. The story comes of sort of like a sequel to the original movie, with Godzilla coming back to Japan seemingly from the dead. This time, Japan has protection from three monsters. Here, we see Baragon, Mothra and King Ghidora presented in a new manner. Mothra is not a creature who lives on a tropical island and is summoned by twin girls. King Ghidora is not a space monster under the control of aliens. Instead, we get a tale of the Earth's monster guardians who have been created for such a task as defeating Godzilla. The special effects are pretty good in this movie. Godzilla looks different in this film than he does in any other. This Godzilla is more like an updated version of the original monster in the classic film that stared it all. There is a bit of a mystery involved when the people in the film try to put together the pieces to uncovering the guardian monsters...as well as unleashing King Ghidora. It's definitely a must see for all Godzilla fans because it has little twists and turns which alter previous stories. I think all fans will be pleasantly surprised by this film.Read full review
This dvd certainly lives up to it's title, and the monster fight scenes are not funny looking. Godzilla looks really mean and realistic, and it's the only Godzilla movie where King Ghidorah is one of the good monsters.I watched this movie on Comet and was surprise that the dvd had more or less of ten minutes of footage I never seen on the Comet tv version. So I am very happy to have won this movie.

Superior millennium era Godzilla flick. The big G is re-imagined as being possessed by Japanese soldiers of ww2 and Mothra,King Ghidorah and Baragon are the guardians of Japan. It sounds like a trainwreck but Shusuke Kaneko of Gamera fame knows how to direct a giant monster flick. Godzilla is not a "good guy" or a misunderstood force of nature here. He's evil and wants vengeance on the people of Japan. The suit design is a bit different as it gives him white zombie like eyes and at times makes him look like he has a beer belly.Thats about my only gripe and a minor one at that. The monster battles are incredible and the human drama is good as well as it relates to the story. This one may not be for everyone as its pretty dark at times, also black humored too but its an original take on the Godzilla story for a change.Read full review
If you are not a serious Godzilla fan, but enjoy watching the big G in action, then I would give this film a try. It is not considered cannon with the other Godzilla sequels, yet serves as a direct sequel to the original Gojira or the American version of Godzilla, King of the Monsters with Raymond Burr. I won't ruin the plot of the movie. But if you are used to Godzilla being the hero of Japan or protector of the world, it is not that type of Godzilla film. As I mentioned before, this is a direct sequel to the first Godzilla film. Godzilla is seen as a freak of nature and it must be stopped at any cost. Godzilla faces Mothra and King Ghidora in a very well filmed and colorful battle to the last. The film does have amazing special effects and obviously a lot of miniatures were used along with some computer animations. This does not take away from this film in any way. My daughter loved watching this and I'm quite sure this is her favorite of all the Godzilla films she has seen. The voice overs are not the best. Nor are they the best of all the Godzilla films that I have watched. But they do not take away from the film too much. If you've watched Godzilla before, you know you are going to get some funny voices that just don't seem to match the actor on screen. If you are a purest, you are able to watch it in its original Japanese with English subtitles.Read full review
