This 7th novel is set just before the Civil War, and slave trading was in full bloom. The story tells of Dorothea Granger, who along with her family are staying with her Uncle Jacob on his farm because theirs was lost in a flood. Dorothea's mother hopes that her brother Jonathan will inherit Jacob's farm eventually, but Jonathan is now studying to be a Dr. Dorothea has attracted one of the men but he is in favor of slavery while her family are Abolitionist. The book takes you back into the Civil War era. The story tells you how people like the Grangers learn to cope against slavery. In this saga, there is a special quilt that plays a major role. Wonderfully written......great author!
I admit, this is the first I have read of Jennifer Chiaverini's Quilt series books and I could not put it down. I was totally taken away to 1860's Pennsylvania. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about a simpler time and place. Do not be fooled by Uncle Jacob's character. He was a gem. I love how the author incorporate's the symbols on the quilt for a secret refuge. Also, how the niece finds out just how brave and strong she really is...A++
This was a very interesting book. I have been quilting for a few years now and find the history of quilts very interesting. The first quilt I made was from the Underground Railroad series. That is why I purchased this book and am glad I did. The author lives in my home state and I will look for more of her work in the future.
Good book. I love Jennifer Chiaverini's work.

This is the 7th book I've read by this author. This book does not follow the Elm Creek Quilt series, per say, but it tells the history of the area back in the 1800's during the underground railroad times. I have never read a book so fast in my life - I literally could not put it down!
