This book, the first in a trilogy which I will finish reading, is good. It took me about 100-125 pages to really get in to the story, but once I found serious interest, I moved through the book very quickly and I look forward to finishing the trilogy. The story, which is surrounded by the 100 years war, is well laid out and fits in to the period perfectly. Cornwell melds the fictional characters and factual history well and he doesn't hold back any punches when it comes to telling the truth about the lack of chivalry and honor that was displayed by soldiers in this time. This was a terrible, bloody war and the atrocities that befell the innocent people of France are truly proof of the sadness of war. Being a fan of historical fiction, I found this book to be very interesting; it compellingly suggests the reasons for, and the responses to, the English and French viewpoints during the 100 years war. The story does not take sides regarding the war itself; rather, it lays out the views of both the French and English royalty and common people before and during the first days of the 100 years war. All in all, this was a good book, well developed, with characters that you could easily care for, or hate, and it kept my interest once it gained my interest. I will definitely finish this trilogy and will read more of Bernard Cornwell's novels. Hopefully, all of his books are this good.Read full review
