I've seen episodes of over a hundred shows of all genres and can say without hesitation The Riches is some of the best (if not the best) television can offer. The Malloys are a family of "travelers," con artists hopping from scheme to scheme until unusual circumstances find them in a dead millionaire's house in a neighborhood that has never met him. The family seizes the opportunity by assuming the identity of Doug and Cherine Rich (and creating the identities of the three Rich children), but the traveler clan and people from Doug Rich's past come to haunt them. Immediately I noticed the show's excellent writing and acting; the plotlines are boldly imaginative but never come off as cheesy. Instead the show alternates between humorous and gritty tones in a beautifully natural manner that absorbs you into the Riches' peculiar world of Panco, a redneck-run real estate firm where the father lands a job, EdenFalls, the gated community where the family resides, and the bloody drama of the traveler campsite. With elements from Weeds and Dexter as well as subtlety either lack, The Riches has quickly become one of my favorite shows, examining the natures of money, family, and the lies we tell for them. As any brilliant show, it was cancelled before its time; but don't let networks' mistakes have you miss the nonetheless remarkable storytelling. After watching a few episodes online (illegally), I bought this set without hesitation and am proud to own it.Read full review
Fans of Eddie Izzard take note-the man is also a fabulous actor with a great range! Izzard plays Wayne Maloy, a traveler (sometimes called Roma or Gypsy). He and his family find themselves in the strange circumstance of being able to steal the American Dream(Mcmansion, lots of cash, cars, etc). This show has smart and funny writing with plots that seem ridiculous at first glance yet play out in a realistic fashion. Minnie Driver plays Izzard's wife, Dahlia. She is recently released from prison. He re-entry into society is a central point of season 1. Her character is immature, annoying, selfish and completely believable. Although I find her character hard to bear I can see where she is coming from. Driver is able to elicit sympathy for a none too likable character. I don't know of many actresses that could pull the job off without making Dahlia into a raving lunatic or witch. The kids are a hidden gem of the show. The 3 kids seem to know more about life than their parents. It's engrossing to watch the oldest 2 take care of the youngest while the parents are oblivious to what the kids are going thru. Wayne and Dahlia exist in their little world; their children seem to be considered as afterthoughts if at all. I look forward to watching season 2 in it's entirety to see if the parents wake up and plug into their kids a bit more. I really think the show would be enriched showing more parental interaction. I love the uniqueness of this show. The premise is fresh and new. Supporting characters are people with which one can easily relate. You will find yourself questioning why you live the way you live as you get deeper into the show. The show doesn't preach or spoon feed the message to it's viewers. It sets out to show how one family deals with being mainstream vs. anti-establishment, and why the mainstream is not always best. The message is clear and concise yet the writers leave the viewer to draw their own conclusions.Read full review
Excellent show; extraordinarily well done with great character development. It has special value in revealing a societal subset called the Travelers, sort of like American Gypsies; they're the consummate scam artists who do aluminum siding, roofing, driveway paving projects - usually with a "down-payment" by the consumer, who then gets a lousy job, if these scam artists are ever seen again after they make their deposits. The series is great since it shows a Traveler family caught up in the ultimate scam and dealing with all the challenges of pulling it off. As intricately woven as The Sting, but all the more pleasurable since it's a series. I can't wait for the next season to begin.
I never heard of the show (which apparently airs on the F/X channel) until someone recommended it because I am an Eddie Izzard fan. The DVD was not available for rent at my local video store, so I purchased the set on Ebay. The show is so entertaining that I watched the entire first season in two days. A few days later I watched the entire season again with the rest of the family and laughed just as hard! We are still quoting lines from one especially funny scene. Minnie Driver is a hoot and Eddie Izzard is - well - amazing! If you like dark humor or the quirky, off-the-wall styles of Weeds and/or Big Love chances are you are going to love this show too! Very witty and entertaining, over and over again! We are anxiously awaiting the Season Two release on DVD! We rate this a very worthwhile purchase.Read full review
This stars Eddie Izzard & Minnie Driver, as the head of a family of con artists named the Malloys. They are set out to steal the identity of a wealthy family in the elite suburban community of Edenfalls. So much intrigue ensues that I was compelled to order Season 2, and I wish they would have continued with the series but they didn't. Go to EDDIEIZZARD.COM and join his fan club
