THE BEST OF SHIRLEY BASSEY is a 1999 budget-priced 10-track compilation released to capitalize on the Welsh nightclub singer's success with the Propellerheads' dance track "History Repeating." The songs are well chosen, and of course include the inevitable James Bond themes "Goldfinger" and "Diamonds Are Forever." However, the track list also comprises such lesser-known (to US audiences--Bassey has remained a big star in Europe) gems as "Never Never Never (Grande Grande Grande)," and surprisingly comfortable and compelling covers of George Harrison's "Something," and Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "The Look of Love." The sound is excellent, and for a cheap introduction to this underrated vocalist, you could do much worse. This is part of EMI Special Products' Ten Best series.
