Wilderness movie about a solitary man, Jeremiah Johnson (Robert Redford), who after the Civil War moves to the Rocky Mountains to become a hunter and trapper. The devastation of war and the total inhumanity of his fellow human beings, leads him to search for solitude. He battles both ruthless Indians, who have marked him for vendetta for desecration of a burial sight, and the merciless elements of nature. His was not intentional, but done in an effort to save others, whose lives were in serious peril. Still, the Indians murder his wife and boy, resulting in a war between Johnson and the Indians. As the Indians continue to send men to kill Johnson, he continues to kill all that they send, becoming a legend to the Indians. There is little spoken dialogue in this film, but the silence speaks volumes. This was a great movie and I'm sure that you will enjoy it.Read full review
While driving I found a nickel. That nickel wasn't exactly what I thought it to be. Watch this movie and find your own nickel. NICKELS = BIG MONEY! WOO HOO! Who we kidding here? This is a CULT classic that makes everyone want to drop what they are doing and head outdoors! Survive off the land as a mountain man. Anyone can do it! Just going into your backyard under your children's playhouse is enough. Dress the family dog in a little beaver outfit and you got yourself a regular all out hunter's dream! I mean how many people can actually say they have encountered the things that Johnson does in the movie? Most of you yuppies can't get out of your soccer games or off your couch to even notice whats happening here. Watch this movie, go buy yourself a bowie and head outdoors, there is no better place to be! Luv Ya!Read full review
One of the best "classic" western movies set before the traditional time period. No fast draws, no horse chases, but great character building with really Great stars!

Robert Redford plays Jeremiah Johnson, who is a loner that travels West to see the Rockie Mountains and become a Mountain Man. As he goes through the trials of learning the skills, he is befriended by an Indian and later takes an Indian wife, who teaches him additional skills. He also finds a boy whose family has been killed by Indians and takes him in like his own son. As they build a life together-they are approached by a Cavalry detachment to help them and Jeremiah makes a mistake by doing it resulting in his wife & boy being killed. Johnson then seeks revenge, and the Indians do likewise, and he is forced to battle both nature and the Indians of the tribe to survive-and become a legend to the Indians as he kills all that are sent against him. A classic movie-in which Redford actually speaks very little- this is a movie will more than fill a nights entertainment-and you will want to watch it over and over. Sydney Pollack is the master director here and his films ( Michael Clayton, Made of Honor, A Civil Action, The Firm, etc) more than speak for his directing abilities. Filmed in Utah, you are ensured of a breathtaking backdrop in almost every scene.Read full review
One of my all-time favorite movies. It never gets old. Great characters with a palatable dose of history.
