Fawlty Towers is British humor at its best, and a perennial favorite with our family. In many ways it's a not-entirely-farfetched vignette of English hotel life in a coastal resort town, thanks to the main characters: The snobbish, affected, irritable, insecure manager Basil Fawlty (John Cleese), his sharp-tongued domineering wife Sybil (Prunella Scales), waitress and hotel assistant Polly (Connie Booth, who was John Cleese's wife and series co-writer), and the hilariously bumbling Spanish waiter-in-training Manuel (Andrew Sachs). Providing additional comic relief and general bedlam are the regular hotel residents (a retired British major and two elderly ladies) and a gamut of guests that include a pugilistic spoon salesman, a con man posing as nobility, an aging French seductress, a vitriolic Californian, a dead body, a food inspector, a rat...and more. I've long thought of Fawlty Towers as the best of John Cleese (OK, along with A Fish Called Wanda and a few selcted Python bits). After recently eliminating our multiply-viewed VHS tapes in favor of DVDs, I decided to buy this complete set on EBay. Being an old TV series, the quality is not on par with current movies (nobody should expect that!) but it's far better than VHS, won't deteriorate, and the additional features, outtakes, and interviews with cast members provide added interest. Good value - I'm sure we'll be happy with it for a long time.Read full review
Great dry British humor. The actors are so great, and the antics and such are so funny. It's an all around delightful and entertaining series. I bought 2 sets on ebay, so I can gift one to a fan of Fawlty Towers. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes John Cleese and dry humor. They don't make comedy like this anymore in my opinion

Dated humor, and British humor at that, but still fantastically funny. Would not pass the PC test these days - but, you know, still really, really funny. Basil the Rat is my favorite - but many of the episodes get close as well.

This is a great DVD set of every Fawlty Towers episode, 12 to be precise. John Cleese, Prunella Scales, Andrew Sachs and Connie Booth are the principles in this hilarious series of a hotel and the many mishaps that occur with the always tempermental Basil Fawlty (Cleese), his wife Sybil (Scales), the hapless Spanish butler Manuel (Sachs) and hostess Polly (Booth) who is an aspiring artist. Every show also features a host of strange characters which only adds to the hilarity. Loaded with special features, this makes a great gift for old and new viewers of the series.
If you like to have a laugh out loud good time, get this DVD set. Basil Fawlty and his wife Sybil are the owners of "Fawlty Towers"... In Sybil's eyes, Basil can't do anything right while Basil thinks he can do no wrong. You will wonder how these two people ever met in the first place. Take this wild 12 episode ride and you will ride it over and over again, each time picking up something new that was said. Some of the humor is local in nature so some of it is hard to understand. Using the english subtitles helps a lot but I suggest you use it after you watch the entire collection without it. Polly and Manuel are the other main characters that have a big part in the chaos that goes on in and around the hotel. If you like John Cleese and Monty Python, you will love this. Warning: You will either love this or you will not get it. I do know a couple of people who do not get this at all.Read full review
