Having spent my life fishing for salmon up in Alaska ("Perfect Storms" up there rarely even make the news in the States) I have to say I thought the characters were pretty "life like". The pressure to make a living for boat and crew is ALWAYS a balancing act between need and risk. The weather, market price, all the things that a Skipper has to balance out to keep going, keep alive. Add the pressure of the necessary time away from home and trying to keep "home" alive and well and it defiantly gets tricky. I thought the actors did a great job with a tough story. Effects are state of the art also. By now we all know about the unexplained rouge waves, though still a mystery to the scientific community. But hey, they are still trying to figure out how 4.5 BILLION years ago, NOTHING exploded, now we have everything. (not 4.4, or 4.6, mind you) Anyway, make lots of popcorn, sit back and try not to throw anything at the jerk sail boat "captain" who's just trying to score with the two "passengers" on the way to the islands. Forgive him, he's probably a retired scientist who's brain exploded trying to sell intelligent people 4.5 BILLION years.Read full review

One of the best true-life adventure movies I've ever seen. It is based on an actual shipwreck, so maybe that's what makes the difference. The characters are well-drawn/acted; the special effects are just plain amazing.
