Its not a classic like STAGECOACH, THE SEARCHERS or RIO BRAVO, but a John Wayne western is still a John Wayne western! If you are like me, you know that the Dukes never fails to deliver, even when the story is so-so, or the cast is forgetable. Which is not the case here: the story is decent enough, and there is a great supporting cast with Stuart Whitman (I would have LOVED to see Rio Bravo's Dean Martin in this role for even more chemistry), the always interesting Nehemiah Persoff, Duke's son Patrick Wayne, and awesome Lee Marvin, who steals the show in the all too short part of the movie he shares the screen with the Duke. Among the John Wayne westerns, it's in the same category as THE WAR WAGON, THE TRAIN ROBBERS, and BIG JAKE.
What a line up of great actors. Set in the Pre Civil War Texas territory. Not historically accurate by any means. Just a rousing story of friends not letting friends down and finding true love and justice.

Standard late Wayne, which he continued to the end of his life, with the exception of the Shootist. Much better in the forties and through the Searchers in 1956. He was already ossified when he made Rio Bravo, in 1959.
