Having been quite familiar with the work of Alastair MacKenzie and of Jonny Phillips, we were quite anxious to see this film, especially when we heard that the setting was rural Scotland. Both actors had worked on the beloved BBC television series Monarch of the Glen and we settled down one evening for what we thought would be some of the same. As we placed the DVD in the player we noticed that it had received a prestigious European film award, and so our children sat down with us. We really could have benefitted from a review such as this. We began a shocking journey with both men in which the unlikely pair breaks down in the most God-forsaken spot in all of Scotland. For quite some time we are unsure as to whether the pair has fallen into a witches coven, or perhaps an unmarked Scottish rural funny farm. The film explores the characters they meet, their interactions with them and life altering events which occur to both characters, all while they are being liquored and fed. Each main character has sex rather graphically for my taste with women they meet at the retreat which is reminiscent of an episode of The Outer Limits without censors. There is also a shocking rather violent scene which I found disturbing as an adult. This film is interesting to those who like the work of the producer, director, actors etc. of this work. It is absolutely and completely inappropriate for children or for teens, and there really isn't a lead in to the sex or violence so it becomes all the more shocking. It was good to see a Peugeot like mine actually working on a long trip, although it did run out of fuel. redherringfarmRead full review
