I'd give this story four and a half really. As a collector of all the Doctor Who programs I think Jon Pertwee was a great doctor and the writers were able to do so much with so little considering the era and budget set aside for special effects. This has action and intelligence, it sets up the Tom Baker era with class and it lets the third doctor have a final victory that's on more than one level, a great story for it's time.
The effects are nothing special, but the story is epic and engaging with the most emotional goodbye of any Doctor to date. Giant spiders from the planet Metabelis 3 are attempting to gain a blue crystal of enormous power which the Doctor took from their planet in "The Green Death". Students at a Tibetan retreat have unwittingly created an intergalactic gateway via meditation from which the Metabelis spiders can travel to Earth. The spiders are not only giant, they are intelligent, and highly telepathic. They can even possess people. Now the Doctor must risk everything to not only save his companion Sarah Jane Smith and the Earth, but the universe itself.
