I first caught Doctor Who during a marathon on the SciFi channel here in the states and needless to say I totally got hooked. I had heard of Doctor Who before, but did not know that there were new series being produced (as the first series only premiered recently here also). I must say the highlight of the show is David Tennent. He is amazing with a capital A. His gives the Doctor wit, humanity and passion while being able to keep us laughing. Billie Piper is also excellent as his companion, and the last few episodes of the series are heartbreaking and smashingly done by them both. This DVD set has been a key ingredient in my getting through my senior year as an undergraduate...we all need a little escapism, right? The only problem with the DVD is sometimes the sound is a bit funny (too loud and then too soft here and there), but otherwise the extras, picture etc. are great. Perhaps my favorite of the extras is the cybermen clips in the blooper real...I don't know why but that made me laugh quite a bit. Anyway, I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a little out of this world-ness that manages to exhibit some real emotions and difficulties. This series manages to be even better than the first (with Christopher Eccelson) but I think the first is good as well. Unfortunately I can't compare it to the old Doctor Whos, but from what I've heard people like the new take on things. So, all in all, I would have to say I love it. Period.Read full review
I grew up with Sir Graves Gastley, The Ghoul, & Star Trek and thought I had seen the best that Sci Fi had to offer. Boy was I wrong. I stumbled onto Doctor who mid was thru the second series 2005 and I was hooked. I continued to watch and am still watching now. David Tennent was Great as the Doctor, and Billy Piper s Rose, well that was a match made in heaven. The Dialog, the Effects, the Story Line, it is all Great. I found myself wanting to go back to the beginning and finally had a chance to view some of the Chris Eccleston episodes, and found myself wishing he could have had a second season for himself. I watch and re-watch these episodes with delight. I wanted to have them for my own, and made the unfortunate purchase of a set from a seller in California, only to find out that the first 2 seasons were burns from BBC TV, not the actual releases. And to add to my pain, they wouldn't play in my Blue Ray Player. this thing plays everything, but wouldn't play these. 4 DVD players later, I finally found one that would play them. After that, I decided that I love this Series enough to make the financial commitment to purchase the original Releases, and dump the set I already had. If you like a Great Story, with GREAT characters, and great story lines, this is the Series for you. The 5th Season thus far is O.K., but I don't find myself as thrilled to watch, and stay in tune. The New Doctor does a good enough job, but I guess when you have grown accustom to a certain Actor, its not the same when they are changed out. I will still keep watching though.Read full review
Doctor Who is a BBC produced show and is now one of my favorites on television! Too bad it's only on cable network like BBC America and Syfy here in the states. For those who don't know Doctor Who, he is a humanoid alien, the last of the Timelords, nine hundred years old and can travel space and time with his spaceship that looks like a blue police telephone box. He regenerates when he needs to, hence the different actors who've played him. The second series is the first series with the tenth actor to play the Doctor, David Tennant. Tennant is by far my favorite! He is hilarious and charismatic as the Doctor, and sparks fly with Rose (Billie Piper) as his companion. I started watching Doctor Who with the second series, and I had no problem whatsoever being able to catch on to what was going on. Each episode has its own story, with a couple two-parters, kind of like The Twilight Zone but with the same main characters. I eventually backtracked later when I finished the three David Tennant series and I liked Christoper Eccleston as the Doctor as well, but if you've never seen Doctor Who before and you want to check it out, I think this is the perfect season to start on!Read full review
Just like the first season on DVD, this boxed set provides extra hours of entertainment in the form of interviews, bloopers, video diaries, etc. It also includes the Children in Need Christmas Special, a short segment that fits in between the Doctor's regeneration at the end of season one, and his crash landing of the TARDIS at the beginning of season two. This small segment explains alot about Rose's attitude towards the "new" Doctor, and also explains WHY the TARDIS crash landed instead of making it's usally smooth appearance. My son particularly enjoyed the blooper reel, which included cybermen extras playing in a kiddie park, and a brief homage to Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody by the Sicorax! Definately worth every penny! You won't be dissapointed!
This was not an easy purchase. This was a bit of money even though it was a good price. I purchased it because I have watched the doctor since I was a child. The entire story line of traveling through time and space is just great. The doctors all have different ways to deal with their problems which is what has keeps it so interesting for decades. I was lucky enough to obtain season one from my parents as a birthday gift and just couldn't help my self with season two. I watch atleast an episode a day and as i go to sleep. The new doctors are truly fantastic. Christopher Eccleston just brought a entire new world with his character and sad enough to see him go it was hard to accept David Tennent, but once again we are not disappointed. He is truely FANTASTIC! The continuing character support with billie piper (rose) is just fantastic. The ending of the second season just rips you apart. I can't rate this show anything less then a ten out of ten for everything from drama, suspense, love, mystery, stories, comedy, etc. Anyone who would enjoy sci fi, action, adventure, comedy will not be dissapointed. the sound and visuals are top notch and you are always left begging for more. I will obtain season 3 soon enough with martha jones.Read full review
