May you live in interesting times, an ancient curse turned into reality for the hapless, hopeless Rincewind, the tragic non-wizard destined to become "The Great Wizzard [sic]" of legend. In this edition, Rincewind is sent to the Counterweight Continent to lead the RedArmy, a pseudo communist rebel force determined to take overthe empire. Unfortunately for the Red Army, the rebellion has friends in high places. Twoflowers returns, and so does (Ghengiz) Cohen the Barbarian, leading his Silver Horde of aging barbarian heroes and a retired schoolmaster. Luggage's gender is determined in a most disturbing way (think creation of much smaller pieces of luggage, and you're on the right track). Again, Pratchett's wry wit is used to fullest effect in this, much longer, installment of the Wizards Series of Discworld novels (check out my guide to navigating Terry Pratchett's Discworld for more information about the various series and reading order). With a little more room to expand the subplots and develop characterization, Pratchett's world becomes much more vibrant than before. The humor is still there, but the world seems less arbitrary and more concrete (well, as concrete as Discworld could ever be, of course). More three-dimensional characters grace these pages than any of his previous works, and it just feels like a tighter novel. In my opinion, this is the point where Pratchett truly came into his own. Even more than his other novels, I suggest this one. If I could give it 6/5, I would.Read full review
Sir Terry was a fantastic writer. I read and reread his works because he is inspiring. His wit and wisdom presented in a humorous style that makes you stop and turn back a few pages to see if he really said that.
