Christopher Moore's novel, "Fool," is a twisted and insanely funny tale that both channels and chides Shakespeare and his work. Moore confesses that he borrows from at least a dozen of the Bard's plays for this patchwork quilt of tragedy, comedy and medieval porn. Had the "The National Inquirer" been around at the time, King Lear would probably have looked like this. There's more murder, mayhem, mistaken identities and scene changes than you'll ever remember, but Moore turns things on their head with an edgy 21st-century perspective that "makes the story line as sharp, surly and slick as a game of Grand Theft Auto." It's 1288, and the king's fool, Pocket, and his dimwitted apprentice, Drool, set out to clean up the mess Lear has made of his kingdom, his family and his fortune- only to discover the truth about their own heritage. In the course of fixing Lear's catastrophic kingdom, the two "find themselves caught up in a plot filled with enough twists, mistaken identities, and sexual innuendos to make Puck chuckle and Falstaff's head spin." "Fool" is a bawdy tale- a rousing buffet of plots, subplots, counterplots, betrayals, war, revenge, bared bosoms, unbridled lust, and a ghost, as seen through the eyes of a man wearing a codpiece and bells on his head. It is filled with gratuitous sex, murder, spanking, maiming, treason, and heretofore unexplored heights of vulgarity and profanity, as well as shaky grammar and split infinitives. The story is a foolish fantasmagorical farce- a real hoot!Read full review
Christopher Moore writes a different take on King Lear told through his court jester or fool. It’s fun read filled with Moore’s acerbic wit and language. This is the first of three books starring ‘Pocket’ the fool. It’s a must for fans of Christopher Moore or a great introduction to his writings. I highly recommend it for anyone who needs a good laugh and a diversion from the trials of modern life today.

Hes a satirist, possibly irrevent, strange, weird, and probably warped, but in a very good way. This guy is good, you will want to read this and will find it hard to put down. This is the prequel to "Serpents of Venice".

Fool is a retelling of Shakespear's King Lear, sort of, from the point of the fool in hs court. It is a bit bawdy without being explicit. It drags one in to the tale and makes one feel sympathies for the fool. I found myself far more emotionally involved with the characters than I generally get reading a book. I have read two or three Christopher Moore vampire stories. This is far more complex and intelligent, but just as laugh out loud funny if not more so. I highly recommend it.
FOOL has got to be one of the top 3 funniest books I have ever had the pleasure to read. Christopher Moore is as a creative writer as the greats of comedy, Woody Allen, Mel Brooks, Seth MacFarlane. Lovely wit, humor, & attention to detail brings his characters to life in such a way you will want to re-read all his works over & over again (like i have).
