I spent my early years in Greenwich Village - 1934 to 1943. I was hoping for a trip down memory lane but this is a scholarly history of the area and devoid of all the references that created my personal experiences in the Village. Memories of roller skating from P.S.41 on Greenwich Avenue to my mother's apartment on Eighth Street next to the Art Playhouse. This always included lovely scents from the bakery in Patchin Place and hearing occasional swearing from some woman in the tower of the Jefferson Market building, asking someone to bring her cigarettes. The narrative didn't take me to the Waverly Inn on Bank Street where my mother waited table after her divorce, nor did it mention the watering trough for horses at Abingdon Square, nor the garden at the apartment house I lived in at 729 Greenwich St., or the Tony Sarg murals in the lobby of the apartment at 16 Jane St. (too far from Washington Square) or any of the other places that live only in my memory. However, the book is beautifully researched and the silky pages a pleasure to touch. I am delighted to have it.Read full review
This is a wonderful "coffee table" book that can be picked up and read at any place....great stories of the Washington Square area of New York City. Some myths dispelled, and others confirmed. The affect that this area had on the beginnings of New York, and the people involved....many wonderful pictures.
Excellent condition! Wonderful, detailed history.
