I love this series and have read all three and now looking forward to Ms. Lakin's 4th which is called.."Getting Old is to Die For," coming out in 2008. This is a series you really should start from book one. The characters develop with each book. There wasn't a Gladdy Gold Detective Agency in the 1st book....but you need to read it to see how it starts. The stories never fail to hold my attention and there are usually one or two sub-plots along with the main plot and most of the time they all come together as the same mystery! I feel bad for Gladdy and Jack in this book. Their first day in Pago Pago, sitting in a hot tub, anticipating what the night might hold in store, when....bingo....a fax is sent to Gladdy from one of the girls. Jack is surprised because nobody was suppose to know where they were. Can you blame him for being upset when they find out it is not an emergency like the fax stated! Gladdy has more patients with "her girls" who do seem to depend on her a whole lot. In the first book I was annoyed by this somewhat, but then you get to know each "girl"(they are all over 70) and understand why stability is important in their lives and as a group they feel secure with Gladdy, their leader and the strong one. Each book has a cast of characters listed in the front and a picture of the apartments with who lives in which one, including the other tenants who Gladdy calls the Yentas, Kibitzers and Sufferers and then the "oddballs and fruitcakes." They all come into play around the complex and you'll get to know each one personally. Also included is a list of Yiddish words.....but after reading one book you won't need to refer to the short glossary when a word is used....you pretty well know the meaning by how it is used and to whom it is directed at! I highly recommend all the "getting old" series.Read full review
