Campy and funny. George Hamilton is wonderful in his dual role. The dialogue is witty and clever. Don't miss a word. Wonderful musical score (by Korngold, I believe). Visually beautiful. Zorro rides again! I bought it to replace my old VHS tape. This is a video to play when you need cheering up. It never fails to bring laughter. I think this is perhaps George Hamilton's best film and performance. Everyone gives outstanding performances. Good triumphs over evil in an unexpected way.
A comedy released in 1981 that has a way of making adults laugh hysterically, and making small children erupt into giggle fits. My family watched our first copy to death, memorized every word, and STILL thought it was the funniest movie ever made. Then one day, Dad lent our copy to a co-worker. About a week later, that co-worker said apologetically, "I'm sorry. I'm going to have to replace your copy of 'Zorro the Gay Blade'." Dad asked, "Why? Did the tape break?" His co-worker answered, "No... My kids watched it, and now they won't let me give it back."
The movie is over 20 years old and hard to find...but very much worth the search. George Hamilton is very good at poking fun at himself and takin on roles that are toungue-in-cheek humor rather than the racious humor out there today. I watched this with my family (13, 14, 16) and everyone had a good time without worrying about some 4-letter bomb falling out or a gratuatous sex scene popping up...this is the second one of these movies I have bought.
Most people don't remember this whimsical movie. It's a great comedy. The material sometimes get a little stupid, but it's part of the fun watching Zoro's other half take over. Just halarious with his different color outfits, the way he makes a mockery of the Akalday. Just a lot of fun to watch. I guess it's a rare commodity, because the collectors price has gone up. It's worth the money though. A crisp clear picture. I'll watch it over and over again.
George Hamilton can do anything! First, he has to do a Spaniard's accent as Zorro. then a flaming gay British Sailor's accent. Then the gay sailor trying to do the Spaniard's accent when he has to temporarily take over for Zorro while he heals from an injury. Hamilton pulls this off Hilariously and in good fun. Just one of Hamilton's many great performances.
