John James Audubon’s Birds In Cross Stitch by Ginnie Thompson was written for even-weave linen and Flower Thread. In the book she explains the differences in materials and gives instructions for working with linen. The illustrations for the written instructions are quite good. She covers the progression from initial stitch through mounting and lacing your piece for framing. She instructs the cross-stitcher about finishing details necessary to present your piece to best advantage. The designs are not as crisply defined as I personally prefer, but I think adding some backstitching would help. The designs are adequate, but the tips and techniques are excellent. I split the difference for a good rating.
I was interested in this book as I enjoy stitching Audubon bird prints. However, I was disappointed in this book. The charts are not as sophisticated as I had hoped. There are about 3 charts I am mildly interested in, but, most of them are not to my liking. I am sure this critique is unique to me - some people may be very pleased. I have been stitiching for many years and find my tastes have evolved to charts that are more detailed and nuanced in color and design. The book does offer many designs and they are well-charted (for what they are) and the instructions are clear.
An amazing book full of beautiful charts......Audubon's!!! What's not to love? I even ordered several which I shall give as special gifts.
