"The Magdalen Sisters" is the true story of three young women--so-called "bad girls"--who are sent away, in some cases for life, for sexual transgressions. One was raped by a cousin, one was a virgin but the nuns who ran the orphanage she lived in judged her a temptress, the third had a boyfriend and eventually a baby. These young women slaved in laundries run by the nuns under conditions of unbelievable cruelty and isolation. Beatings, shaving heads, and psychological and sexual abuse were all used by the nuns to keep the young women in line. While the film is billed as an ultimately inspiring story of girls who took power into their own hands and defeated an unjust system, nothing undoes the scars they took on over the course of their time at that terrible institution. The acting is quite marvelous and the direction of Peter Mulan appropriately austere, allowing this powerful story to speak for itself without a trace of sentimentality or preachiness. Easily one of the finest films of the past few years and one of my favorites. This movie is fictitious in its story line, but it was loosely base on the Laundries that were ran by the Catholic order of The Sisters Of Mercy throughout the 19th century and 20th century. Although those nuns habits did not looked anything like the original habits worn by The Sisters Of Mercy. But beyond that it was a great film and although after the movie came out the Sisters Of Mercy apologize to all the women that felt were wronged by the Sisters while in the Laundries, but the Vatican condemn the film. To me as a Catholic I do believe that there are bad apples in all religions and thus we must not generalize the Nuns/Sisters that acted not in the true spirit of charity and humility but acted like animals to others. As my mother did go to a Catholic school for girls run by nuns and in her experience she told me that all the nuns were compassionate to all the intern girls they were always tender in teaching them, they showed them how to pray and become respectable women, and this was in a country where kids use to be beat up by everyone and in a time when child abuse was unheard of, so we must not cast stones and have a bad perception to all the good ladies that are true servants of God and make them pay for those rotten women.Read full review
Story is history. All young b people today need to see it, to understand what former generations had to deal with and how "easy" life is for them.

I saw this movie years ago and was reminded of it so I wanted to check it out. It tells a very dark and sad story of how poorly women were treated just for not meeting societies standards of them. Highly recommend!
