This movie serves as an invaluable insight into what it is like to be an unheralded genius. Too often, we do not praise our artists until they are gone. Van Gogh was an extremely gifted artist whom we failed to appreciate in his time. Who knows what he could have given the art world had he lived even a few years more. The movie does a great job of giving us his human side. Artistic genius is often something we think of as amorphous. Here, we are reminded that Van Gogh as a man who lived, loved, cried, laughed, became ill, and eventually died. I showed this movie to my Freshman (at Virginia Tech). Even though it is not an art class, I believe Van Gogh is one of those staples in the history of humanity with which everyone should be familiar. I wish I had the time to teach them about Mozart, Coltrane, De Vinci, and KRS-One, but I digress. However, "Vincent and Theo" is important for it’s historical context and well as it's cinematic quality. I highly recommend it.Read full review
I knew that VVG was a tormented soul, but this movie brought it to light as to how tormented he was. And poor, poor Theo. It was good to see the closeness of the two brothers and interesting as to the different things they had to deal with individually. I am so glad I purchased this movie and will watch it again. For some reason VVG has intrigued me since I was in junior high school, more so than any other artist and I am near retirement age now.
Since thie movie was made I had only caught five minutes of it here and there and felt that I was missing a good movie. Finally, I purchased the film and discovered I was wrong. It's a great move, not just a good one. The acting by all is overwhelming and conveys the pathos in the life of a great artist. What a beautiful film overall!
LOVE LOVE LOVE this movie....how true to form is it? Don't care, Tim Roth's performance simply could not have been done by anyone else. Best portrayal of Van Gogh I've seen! You do have to listen closely though, sometimes a little difficult to make out what they are saying, but still very worth watching.
The story line was the most accurate of any history I have read or seen. I am very impressed by the accurate truth in the history of Vincent and Theo. Especially for the year this film was created. Bravo!
