I am a certified math teacher. I have taught in the classroom as well as in my own home for many years. I have tried a number of other curriculum but I like Saxon best for math because it is much more "brain friendly." It helps the student learn things gradually, reviewing what she/he already knows and preparing him/her for concepts that will come later. I love the pacing of the book. I have also spoken with a number of other homeschool moms who greatly prefer this text. It is very straightforward to use with success, even for those with less math experience. The only negative I have ever heard about this series is that you can't throw the book at the child and expect him/her to pick it up by himself. It does require teacher input. Classroom teachers who like to have a "daily topic" and only deal with that topic for the day express frustration because the kids may have questions involving past lessons, and it's hard to keep all the class doing one thing. But of course, that is the strength of the book, as well - it addresses individual needs. The "rhythm" of teaching and learning in this book is different from that of a more traditional approach, but I have found that to be a good thing. Students I have worked with have learned more readily and more thoroughly with this text series. A couple of words about editions. The first edition of this book is good, but the later editions are better. I like the third edition because you can tell it had been worked over a bit and some bugs worked out. I especially loved the "warm-up" box at the first, which had kids do some mental math daily. I thought that was excellent and promoted great math sense. I don't like the later books, though, because they are soft bound and harder to physically manage. I've had more people tell me they are just too big and bulky - I do wish Saxon would go back to the hard bound format. Too much info - it strikes people as intimidating.Read full review
I use Saxon Math for homeschooling. Math concepts are clearly explained and built upon. Then, as the student progresses through the book, concepts are reinforced by continual inclusion in the problem questions of each lesson.
Verified purchase: Yes | Condition: Pre-owned
Continues to build off of the lower Saxon titles. Easy for Mom and Dad to get refreshed to help. Answer key and test booklets make grading and testing a breeze.
I like the book because it was hard cover and looks new. I bought it so I could review my children and to myself since I'm been out of school for a long time.
