Since it is an election year, I decided to try to get to know the candidates better and wanted to learn more about each time frame of the political lives of the Clintons. (I also read "Final Days" by Barbara Olson.) This book was based on the Whitewater scandal, which, according to Susan McDougal, was not as much of a scandal as we were lead to believe. In this book, Susan describes her life basically from beginning to end as she is part of a large family, meets and marries Jim McDougal and their lives together as they hob nob with the Clintons, etc. She is eventually sent to prison for not cooperating with Ken Starr during a grand jury trial. The reason that she won't speak is that everyone else has agreed to speak against the clintons in exchange for special favors. If she tells the truth, it will sound as though she is telling a lie, a lie that would go on and on. The most interesting part about this book is the way she was treated in the different prisons that she was taken to. I don't believe that prisoners should have any special treatment, but I certainly don't believe that they should have to go through "cavity" checks each time they receive a visitor if they are not known drug users or that they should have to drink water from a fountain over their dirty toilet!! I believe that she and her cell mates were treated very inhumanly, something that is totally unnecessary, unacceptable and that has no place in a great country.Read full review
It was hard for me to put this book down. It was complementary to the audio tape Blood Sport. It was very interesting.
