As a huge Gundam fanatic, I had high expectations for Mobile Suit Gundam F91. Perhaps too high. As it stands, F91 is an average anime movie that is certainly worth a rental, but isn't really worth the purchase in the end. The main problem with the movie is the pacing. It was originally a television series that ran into production problems and was changed into a (roughly) 2 hour movie. Instead of rewriting the script to tell a specific story, they simply condensed the original story. By doing this, everything feels rushed and unfinished. The next problem with the movie is the abysmal English dubbing. It's truly terrible. Alot of the voices are recognizable (Seabook Arno shares the same voice actor as Shiro Armada from 8th MS Team) but they didn't do a very good job with this movie. Many of the voice actors sounded like they were simply reading the script as fast as possible, not really caring how their voice sounded in the end. The movie does have its merits, however. The mobile suit designs are spectacular; frankly it's some of the best in the Gundam universe, if not mecha in general. The animation is also good; many Gundam movies have poor animation quality, especially the condensed films. F91's animation isn't bad at all; it isn't great (it's no Akira or Patlabor The Movie, all were released within 4 years of each other) but it isn't bad. It's a definite improvement over Char's Counterattack in terms of animation, but it's a decline in overall story quality from that masterpiece of mecha anime. If you are a Gundam fanatic, then it could warrant a purchase simply to complete the collection. If you're just a general anime person, then this movie should be rented or borrowed, not bought. Overall an average anime, but it isn't the worst I've ever seen.Read full review
this movie takes place in the universal century time line. but even if you never saw an episode of the original series you will like this one. it takes place in uc 123 (30 years after the events in the last movie.) this allows the story to reference the older series but not be dragged down by back history so new fans can enjoy with out needing to know about the time-line. it starts during the cross-bone vanguard conflict the eff has been stagnant after chars neo-zeon fell and the folding of the replubic of zeon in to the federation in uc 100. so we open to a mass slaughter of Jegan units witch were the heroes of cca now being wiped out by the newer compact ms used by the vanguard. during the course of the movie we are introduced to many replacement grount suits including the Heavygun meant to be the new standard unit of the efsf the gcannon a early unit by the snri org witch starts to replace ae as the producer of federal ms. the hero seebrook even uses a new transforming guntank model that was rejected and sat in a museum. in the second quarter we meet the F91 onboard a training ship witch the crew dubs gundam after the legendary ms of the past. the story works but does have a lot of plot holes thanks to the movie being based on the planned 13 out of much longer tv series. so if you saw the original series it may feel like a retelling of it but it does feel new.Read full review
Excellent Animation, great mobile suit designs, originally planned as a 50 episode tv series, but due to conflict of some kind it was compressed in an hour and 58 minutes.......all your favorite things about Gundam are here, it just feels like this series should have been fleshed out more, it seems like it would make for an interesting series, all in all it was a worthy addition to the Gundam franchise and is highly recommended!
As with all the UC Gundam series its is dark. The good guys are bad, the bad guys are bad, and as usual some kids are stuck in the middle. I'm not sure anyone could say this was a wonderfull movie. The animation was about like the original Gundam and the character development was sub-par. The storyline was not this animes strong-suit; generaly everyone is evil and some emotion lacking kids are the heros? Only get this if you want to complete your gundam collection.
Animation was ok and the mechas were well designed. The storyline was just awful as it kept jumping all over the place, not making any sense at all. It felt like several people wrote a lot of different parts and patched up together with no consideration to reality, making this film a childish junk, as opposed to a drama like the original series back in the 80s. Looks Bandai was running short of cash so decided to get a quick fix by relying on the good old brand name. If you are a Gundam beginner, start with the original movie trilogy (or, even better, the complete TV series) - it will convince you that Gundam used to be a brilliant epic drama, not a children's catoon.
