The only reason I don't give this a 5/5 rating is that it takes a really specialized fan to appreciate this movie - the acting is mediocre at best (excepting Dennis Wilson, who basically freelances his character throughout the movie, and does a great job doing so.), and the plot-line is kinda muddled. What makes the movie is the CARS, and the fact that it COULD have happened in the 70's and wouldn't happen today. Also, the soundtrack is classic! Think of the this as the car version of Easy Rider, and you will probably love it like I do! Ahh, history at it's best....
I love metal tins! If you can find one of these special edition with the book and the key chain, get it! The sound and the picture are beautiful.

This movie isn't for everyone, but it represented a way of life in the past that I was a part of. So, I do connect with the characters and the story that they are telling. Although the acting is somewhat below par. I actually knew people who were like each of the characters, sullen and reserved like James Taylor's character and so on. To me, the movie represents not only racing and the cars of the day, but the freedom to do what they were doing. Some people call this a cult classic, but I call it the fast and the furious of the 70s.

This film has to be 'your sort of thing' to be fully appreciated - this being the case it is hard to fault, whilst it is quite slow paced with very little in the way of current Hollywood automotive spectacle, it engenders the level of insight and 'soul' normally only associated with a documentary. The characters names are never revealed during the film referred to instead by associated titles, Warren Oates character drives a Yellow Pontiac GTO and is thus only ever referred to as 'GTO'. Aside from the chance to see aspects of everyday America not generally covered by films made during this era - the real attraction of the film is the cars, specifically the 1955 Street Rod Chevy occupied by 'The Driver' and 'The Mechanic'. If 60's big block muscle cars are your thing then the scene where the '55' dives in and out of traffic up a mountain road in pursuit of 'GTO' will make Ronin and French Connection pale into insignificance - Enjoy.Read full review
