THE MISSING KENNEDY was published at about the same time as ROSEMARY: THE HIDDEN KENNEDY DAUGHTER by Kate Clifford Larson. You really should read and compare both, because the authors take the same facts and the same people and draw entirely different conclusions. Larson's book is mostly about Kennedy life before Rosemary's lobotomy. She theorizes that Rosemary was severely mentally delayed from birth, and that Joe Kennedy had her lobotomized and institutionalized to avoid embarrassment for his family. Koehler-Pentacoff, whose aunt was Rosemary's primary caregiver at the St. Coletta institution, draws on her own experience with Rosemary as an elderly woman. She theorizes that Rosemary was never "mentally retarded" before the lobotomy; she had learning disabilities, emotional problems, and psychiatric problems, and that Joe Kennedy agreed to the lobotomy which was touted as a miracle cure, because he genuinely believed it would benefit his daughter. Because no one alive today can possibly know what Rosemary or Joe thought or felt, it is best to compare both books and draw your own conclusions. THE MISSING KENNEDY contains many rarely-seen photos of Rosemary as an older woman.Read full review
