I absolutely LOVE this flute. I bought it for my son for his school band class, after renting one for over a year, and this was well worth the money. The flute was in excellent condition, exactly as described, the pictures were exceptionally detailed in the listing and it had a set of plugs with it so that my son could use it as a closed hole flute until he learned to play with only open holes (which he did incidentally within a months time). I had never paid much attention to music before my son started playing flute in band last year and I could tell he was progressing as the year went on and when he got this flute, I noticed a difference right away. I thought maybe he had just been practicing more so he sounded better, and that was partially true, but the quality of this flute was just so much better than the rented one he had previously had, that it made such an immense difference that even someone with a totally untrained ear could notice a huge change in performance. I know this isnt supposed to be about the seller, so I wont even go into what a difference that made as well, but this flute is well worth the purchase! I am glad I made this choice! Definitely a Five star purchase!!!Read full review
I took the flute to a music shop to have it cleaned and oiled and the pads replaced, because it was an old flute. They told me it was a good solid older Made in USA flute that is much better than the newer flimsy junk flutes flooding the market today. They replaced the pads, adjusted it, cleaned, etc. and it plays very very nicely. The action is smooth and it has an excellent tone. These old Emerson flutes might need some maintenance and repair, but they can be completely overhauled so that they work and sound as good as they did when they were brand new.

Like any instrument, there are entry level instruments, and intermediate ones, and more advanced ones in the Emerson line. The basic Emerson student flute - all silver plated - is a sturdy, workhorse flute. It is designed to withstand the mistakes in handling a beginner might tend to make, but still produce a good tone, provide good key action, and quality musical experience. About half the students I started playing with as a flutist started with Emerson or DeFord flutes. They sound good, stay in tune, work very well, and have a great embrochure for developing good technique. As a flutist develops skill and improves. s/he may want to step up to a better instrument -- solid silver, better springs, open hole "French" keys, etc. These exist in the Emerson line, too! There are solid silver flutes of very fine quality available from Emerson/DeFord. The flutist looking to step up to a more advanced flute needs to do research and try out flutes to see what fits best -- a used flute can definitely save money, but only of it is the right flute. As a flutist and a flute teacher, I appreciate the Emerson flutes for their affordability and for the ease of adjustment and repair when they need it (which isn't often). These flutes LAST and LAST - they are well built, and the screws/hardware is easily accessible to techs for adjustment and repair. Pads are standard sizes and readily available.Read full review
