Mister Roberts (Henry Fonda) is the Cargo Officer, and second in command on a cargo supply ship plodding the backwaters of the Pacific during WWII. The Captain is Capt. Morian (James Cagney). He is a ruthless tyrant and a consumate but kisser. His dream is promotion to a Naval Captain. Basically uneducated, he came up through the Merchant Marines and has a real problem with college men. Another officer on this tub is Ensign Pulver (Jack Lemon)who is always coming up with all sorts of pranks to piss off the captain, but in truth he is a total coward when it comes to actually doing any of them. The Doc (William Powell) is like a father figure to the crew and gives all advice. The crew tries anything to break up the boredom of their routine, but the Captain is practically a sadist the way he pushes the men. The heat is unbearable but the men are never allowed to work without their shirts. He has denied the crew shore leave for months until they are almost ready to mutiny. Mr Roberts does his best to keep a lid on the crew, but is constantly at odds with the Captain. Mr. Roberts want real combat duty but is afraid to leave the crew at the mercy of this man. The Captain uses his cruelty to the crew as a lever against Mr. Roberts because he knows that Roberts is his biggest asset. Simply put, Mr. Roberts makes the Captain look good, and if he let him go, his image to his superiors would diminish. Several of the crew members have conspired to write a letter for Mr. Roberts requesting transfer to combat duty. The Captain has threatened reprisals towards the crew if he wrote any more letters. Now the crew has written a letter and signed the Captain's name in approval. This is a great movie and a classic with a wonderful cast.Read full review
