Well packaged, and works fine straight out of the box - the autofocus works really smoothly, although in some cases the camera (Nikon D3200) wasn't able to focus. Zooming in and out or removing and replacing the lens has worked so far in these cases. The lens is also very light and portable, although I'd imagine the plastic finishing may wear quickly if exposed to extreme conditions; the optical quality is also good over the entire range (from a quoted minimum distance of ~ 1ft upwards). One thing though; this lens does NOT come with vibration reduction (VR), so longer exposures will probably benefit from using a tripod or stable support; all in all, this kit lens makes a good starter lens for general purpose usage.

Unfortunately it did not work. I just tried it today. I'll need to return it. Although it is my fault the lens also does not have the VR feature. I would prefer to return it for one that works and also has the VR feature. If an additional charge is necessary please advise

The Nikon AF 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR lens offers quite a bit of bang for the buck when it comes to sharpness and lack of distortion. The distortion on this lens is easily managed with Photoshop CS2 or newer versions. You can go to Ken Rockwell's site, search for this lens review, and at the bottom he will tell you how to correct the distortion in Photoshop. The lens is fairly sharp above f/5.6 even in the corners. There is a bit of light falloff in the corners at f/3.5 and 18mm but it clears up pretty good if you stop down to f/5.6 or zoom in to about 22mm. I am a bit disappointed with the VR function. Canon's Image Stabilization and Nikon's Vibration Reduction have been touted in the press as being one of the greatest advancements in camera technology. As an owner of both types of stabilization, I am less impressed than I am with just a plain old fast lens. Perhaps I am old school, but I'm just in my 30's so I should still be pretty open to new things, but this one has not taken me aback yet. The jury is still out with me. But this is a quality lens for a fair price and no more than it costs it is well worth the money, even without the VR feature. So give it a try, it's much cheaper than trying the VR on the 70-200 f/2.8G AF-VR or any other Nikon VR lens.Read full review
Nikon AF Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G Lens performs well in the outdoor and good lighting setup. It is sharp, silent, and fast focusing and can deliver good images in outdoor and bright environment while the lens is not very useful in slightly low illumination condition, such as cloudy or indoor setup. The lens is somehow slow and images are slightly soft when the illumination is not ideal, for taking group outdoor picture of soccer team after a game in a cloudy/raining day as an example. Although VR provides good image stability, it does not really make much impact within this short depth of field range by 18-55mm. I only use this lens as "leisure-use" lens along with low-weight dSLR camera on easy family trip particularly in sunny days when I just want to grab a camera for some picture taking but don't want to carry too many gears to ruin the fun of family interaction.Read full review
I wanted a wide angle zoom lens to replace my not so great other lens. Being short of money, I decides to check reviews on different Nikon lenses. This one had great reviews and the pictures seemed to confirm what they where writing about. The lens arrived well packed. It's a plastic lens made in the Orient for Nikon.I was not expecting much. I decided to add a rubber lens hood to protect it from shocks. It also helps with manual focusing as the focusing wring is on the front of the lens. You just grab the lens hood and focus. You get a better grip that way. An other problem with the lens is if you do decide to use an add on rubber lens hood, you will not be able to use a filter at the same time as there will be dark spots in the corners. The good news is that the pictures are sharp and le lens is light. Easy to cary around. Just be shure not to pick up the camera by the lens as it has a plastic mounting ring. Very happy for the price.Read full review
