If you are a fan of Hunter S. Thompson then this is definitely a film you need to see. Being a early work of Thompson you can see the beginnings of his patented gonzo journalism slowly dripping out in this entertaining film about a young journalist trying to find his voice just as Thompson was during the time this book was written. An for those who are just looking for a good flick then why not give the Rum Diary a go?

Johnny Depp once again tackles a quirky role. If even one half of this story is true, it explains much about why Hunter S. Thompson was so strange. The film itself mirrors the main character's existence; wandering around in an alcohol induced fog, wanting to do the right thing, but perhaps just a bit too apathetic to get off of the couch. In the final summation, were we entertained? Sure. Did we come away with any truth? NAAH. A good, but forgettable film.
Decent movie, decent quality digitizing, sparse packaging, but you are buying it for the movie not the liner notes.

it may be 19 years since his last film, but bruce robinson hasn't lost his touch. in his adaptation of hunter s thompson's novel, he mixes broad comedy with attacks on corruption and press impotence issues as relevant today as they were in the 1950s puerto rico. johnny depp blend touches of his fear and loathing and pirates characters into drunken journalist paul kemp, resulting in a meandering journey of self-discovery, nazis, cockerels and impressive amounts of rum. a great movie to get and watch.
